It sounds like Bryant tried to punish Varon economically for his unpleasant conduct. The "speech act" that's being "punished" here was an attempt to get someone else fired. Are we talking about infringement on free speech here, or a personality clash? Am I supposed to go along with it because of factors unrelated to free speech?

Sounds to me like she ran up against a rude and dominating male ego and just wanted him to adhere to professional norms. She wasn’t trying to get him fired. She wanted the unprofessionalism to cease, and then later, to be treated fairly — not an exceptional ask.

And it was a pattern of behavior, not a single incident. Just another example of elites thinking the rules don’t apply to them because of their dazzling talent or erudition. I’m heartily sick of these Übermenschen getting away with this type of bullying.

She is a brave woman. I hope FIRE is able to help her. I hope she wins her case. And I hope she has a brilliant career.
