You may be right but any independent observer will attest that the NYT has been out to get Trump for a long time and deserves to be taken to task. Same goes for Kimmel et al.

Is the market not perfectly capable of taking them to task? Many have noted in Kimmel’s case, which you bring up, that the ratings have been showing him the door for a long time. The government doesn’t need to do anything.

This. The government cannot be involved. Same for the NY Times. The public is waking up to them too:

It should be and the market is a useful barometer of public opinion. It is however subject to distortion by powerful forces in government and media ownership. Yes, Trump is impatient in trying to force through his views by these media forces were equally keen to use their power to incriminate him, with little success.

A look at how the New York Times uses one-side propaganda to play up friends and attack foes. For instance, police shootings of unarmed blacks get 19 timeshare coverage than shootings of unarmed whites.

"often setting the standards in terms of fact-checking, objectivity and independence..." That almost made me choke! That may have been true in the past but in recent years the NYT has deliberately and persistently done fake fact-checking and showed no objectivity. Just the most recent example is from yesterday, where the paper used a headline stating certainty about increased wildfires, citing a paper that only said "may" based on computer models using the unrealistically high SSP3-7.0 scenario. (The authors also failed to consider adaptation. An objective and critical reporter would have pointed that out.)

To be clear, I agree completely in criticizing Trump's legal action. But don't make out the NYT to be a paragon of objectivity.

It’s meant to be a descriptive statement about its reputation in news and the influence it has on other outlets. That’s what warrants it taking a particularly strong stand.

But don’t get me wrong, I’m as clear-eyed as anyone they’ve let their readers down on numerous occasions, especially in the aftermath of Kirk’s assassination.
