The Eastland precedent is such a frustrating catch-22 for press protection. Courts won't look behind the subpoena's stated purpose, so Congress gets free reign as long as they frame it right. I've seen this play out in othe contexts where institutional gatekeepers essentially get deference-by-default, and the practical chilling effect on sources is massive even when nothing ilegal happens.

The Secretary of Defense "accidently" sent classified information to Russia with no subpoena for that breach of security but the Republicans under Shitler want to get in an uproar over a journalist doing his job? Hypocrisy at a new low.
