Wondering how the new “insults” law might affect anglophones here since English is being more and more ostracised. They distributed his weekend’s provincial election info in French only. Will speaking English to a civil servant now be deemed ‘an insult’? And what about to my medical professional?
Anthropological realities impose enduring limits on projects of total control. Human beings are not fully reducible to data, algorithms, or administrative categories. They persistently need dignity, meaning, autonomy, and recognition. When these needs are systematically compressed, tensions often accumulate rather than dissipate. History suggests that highly rigid systems eventually encounter resistance, adaptation, or unintended consequences that exceed their designers' expectations. Technology may expand the capacities of surveillance and coordination, but it does not eliminate the fundamental unpredictability of human beings. The prospect of a fully administered "Prison Planet" may appear plausible in the short term; from an anthropological perspective, however, it remains a hazardous illusion for those who seek to build it.
This is, sadly, par for the course in strains of Quebec culture: they really don’t like negative depictions, especially from anyone they consider an outsider, and never mind if it’s warranted.
Eight or nine years ago, Andrew Potter penned a salient and relatively anodyne article in Maclean’s about the winter traffic problem in Quebec being linked to cultural malaise.
The government responded by essentially pressuring McGill university to squeeze him out of his coveted job there for which he was entirely qualified under the pretext that, not only was he casting Quebec culture in a negative light, but he was doing so as a maligned “Anglaise”, despite being fully bilingual and having resided in Quebec for a significant period.
It also says a lot about how seriously this rendition of Quebec culture takes its shortcomings. Rather than rectify them, they would rather sweep even honest and innocent reporting under the rug. You can imagine, then, how they react to anything construed as deliberate derogation, or “disrespect”.
This stands in stark contrast to the contempt and condescension that the police show regular citizens on a daily basis. We should take it on the chin, and they get protection under the law? Double standards if ever I saw them.....
