I underwent the type of talk therapy being debated in this case back in college (circa 2011). I regret taking that therapy but I also disagree with the bans for the reasons outlined above. I would prefer gay and lesbian people find counselors who affirmed their sexuality, but viewpoint discrimination runs counter to the first amendment and the arguments for such bans could easily be abused.

Conversation therapy removes patient autonomy because its purpose is to affirm cis/het identities regardless of patient goals. It’s manipulative at best, coercive at worst … even using just words. If the bans are struck down, the government can’t ban licensed professionals from removing patient agency at all.
