I think it would be a good idea to have a school wide reading and study of Animal Farm: students, faculty , and administrators who have bred like rabbits. A particular focus on why Orwell wrote the book, who his intended audience was , and what their reaction was.....essentially attacking him for being a traitor and giving ammunition to the enemy.

There are two distinct threats to academic freedom on college campuses. The first is the one that FIRE has been working on for a long time - campus cultures that try to shut down things considered offensive by students, faculty, or administration, and/or by alumni or other outside stakeholders who press universities to do something. The second is threats from state or federal governments to investigate and punish universities or individuals who work or study there for engaging in speech disfavored by the state. These are two distinct threats which this article seems to throw in the same bucket. They have distinct causes and different solutions. It’s tough to blame Yale for threats to speech which come from the federal government, even if they may deserve blame for other threats.
