Professors can try. But if you have students who performatively huff and refuse to engage readings they don’t like, signaling to other students they are being judged if they do engage, it becomes the sound of one hand clapping.

The truly hot topics of today — trans and gender — are approached by many students as under a fatwa they are pledged to uphold. The idea that the professor will not judge or punish you for your views does nothing when other students make menacingly clear that they will.
